Chilterns

2021 Adventure Race

Event Details

The 2021 Chilterns Adventure Race is the second event in the 2021 Questars Adventure Race Series. This event will see Questars return to the Tring area, which has proved a popular location in the past. However, the 2021 event will be different from previous Questars events held there.

The plan is to hold the 2021 Chilterns Adventure Race from a new venue. That is to say, a venue that we haven’t used for a Questars adventure race before. We are excited to have secured this venue which is ideally situated in the heart of the countryside. As a result you don’t have to go very far on foot or bike to get on some great off-road trails.

In recent years, Southern England has enjoyed some warm weather at this time of year. If the same happens again for this event in 2021, then the woods and tree lined rights of way that form a patchwork network right across the Chilterns will provide some welcome shade. And what could be more pleasant than paddling along the Grand Union canal on a warm summer’s day?

Join us in the Chilterns in 2021

If you entered one of the 2020 Questars Adventure Races that were unable to go ahead due to Covid-19, then we will send you an email at the end of this week when all the 2021 races have been announced. This email will outline your options and explain how to go about transferring your entry over to this event, if that’s what you want to do. Please only contact us if you haven’t received this email from us by Monday 7th December, and remember to double check your junk/spam folder first!

Kayaks provided

Sit-on-top kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids are all provided.

Bike hire available

You can hire a bike for this adventure race if needed.

Questars adventure races give you the option to run, bike and kayak. You can choose which of the following disciplines you do (if you don’t want to do all three)…

  • Trail Running
  • Mountain Biking
  • Kayaking

We give you a map with all the run, bike and kayak checkpoints marked on and you see how many you can visit within the time limit. You choose which checkpoints to visit and in what order. Hence the time spent and distance covered on each discipline is up to you.

All kayak equipment is provided and bike hire is available if needed. So all you need to take part is a pair of running shoes – and a sense of adventure!

Take on the challenge of this adventure race on your own or team up with friends/family and go around together.

You can take part…
  • on your own as a solo participant
  • with another person (as a pair)
  • in a team of 3 or 4 people

Pairs and teams who wish to be competitive must remain together for the duration of the race i.e. all team members do each discipline together (it is not a relay race).

Questars adventure races are for everyone, irrespective of your ability and previous experience. On average, a quarter of participants at a Questars event have never done an adventure race before. So if you are a complete beginner you will not be alone!

And if you are an experienced adventure racer, expect some stiff competition. From Olympic medallists to Adventure Racing World Champions, we have had them all.

Questars events attract athletes not just from the UK but also from overseas too.

Every participant needs a bicycle for this event (unless you only intend to run and/or kayak in which case please contact us first before you enter so we can advise accordingly).

We recommend that you use a mountain bike (preferably with front suspension) as these are best suited to deal with the broadest range of off-road terrain and trail conditions that you might encounter during the race. You can either bring your own or hire one from our official provider.

However, you are welcome to use a different type of pedal cycle (e.g. a cyclocross bike) if you want to, as long as…

  1. it is designed to be used off-road (slick tyres are not allowed).
  2. you understand and accept that it may not be as suitable as a mountain bike and may therefore hinder your progress.

Anyone using an e-bike must declare this before they start and will not be eligible for a winners prize.

Bike Hire

Bikes for the 2021 Chilterns Adventure Race can be hired from Cyclexperience and collected from the event base on the day.

Cyclexperience have been providing a bike hire service at Questars adventure races for well over 10 years now. They are offering the usual package for Questars participants which includes delivery, onsite support, post-ride maintenance and cleaning.

Hire bikes must be booked in advance. Booking at least a month in advance is strongly recommended to ensure availability.

You can book a hire bike for this event on the Cyclexperience website, though please note the following (last updated: 14 June 2021)

Not all the bike options displayed are available for this event and the basic price shown is for general hire (not competitive events). So you need to make sure you select a DELUXE LEVEL (or if unavailable in your size then a STANDARD LEVEL mountain bike) AND the EVENT SURCHARGE which includes delivery and collection, on site support and competitive/event use.

The total price should be £40-43 per bike. If your total is less than this then you have either selected the wrong bike level or you have not selected the £20 Chilterns Event Surcharge (under extras – scroll down to find), both of which are required.

On Step 2 of 5 (image of screen shown below)…

  1. where you are asked to select the type of bike, click on OFF ROAD (highlighted by green arrow & circle on image below).
  2. scroll down to the DELUXE LEVEL bike option highlighted by yellow circle on image below (or STANDARD LEVEL bike if no Deluxe level bikes are available in your size)
  3. under EXTRAS scroll down and select the EVENT SURCHARGE (The Chilterns) highlighted by red circle & arrow on image below
  4. select the sizes and quantities of the bikes you require on the right hand side (if you are unsure what size bike you need, you can state so and your height in the additional information box on step 3 of 5 at the bottom of the page – before proceeding to checkout)
  5. when done, click on the ADD TO CART button to proceed
  6. check the total amount is correct (£40-43 per bike)
