Compass

5. Compass

We’re a big fan of Silva compasses and have never gone wrong with them (well, not due to the compass). Our favourite is the jet wrist compass and the outdoor classic is a great entry-level compass.

Running pack

6. Running pack

As with compasses, we like the Silva running vests. The 5 litre versions are great for summer events with the larger 10 litre version better for when you need to carry extra layers with you.

Books

7. Books

Adventurer at Heart (kindle only) and Arthur the King are good adventure racing reads. For navigation, we would recommend Squiggly Lines and the Ultimate Navigation Manual. Fantastic Female Adventurers, Born To Run and Feet In The Clouds are also well worth a read.

Trail shoes

8. Trail shoes

As with bikes, it is impossible to have too many pairs of trail shoes! We’ve been wearing Inov8 for the last ten years or so and always get on well with them. We like the Trailtalon shoes which are available in men’s and women’s sizing.

Headtorch

9. Headtorch

At this time of year, a good headtorch is worth its weight in gold! We switched over to Fenix headtorches last year and really like them. The HM65R-T v2.0 is a brilliant torch, particularly for longer adventures whilst the HL18R-T is great for shorter trail runs.

Bike tool

10. Bike tool

We really like to carry one tool that can pretty much do it all. Although heavier, a multi-tool which includes a chain-break tool is a great bit of kit (make sure you remember to pack a spare quick link as well!). This Topeak tool does just the job.

Survival bivvy

11. Survival bivvy

Our favourite bit of kit for longer adventures is the Sol Escape Bivvy. We’ve slept in it in cow sheds, garages, barns, beaches and even a telephone box.
