Race Report:

The 2009 questars series got off to a flying start on Saturday with a bumper turnout of Masters and Novice adventure racers competing in the New Forest.

The event was based from the idyllically located Moyles Court school on the western edge of the National Park. The race briefing in the sports hall previewed the course including how The X Factor meets questars! The unusual format for the kayaking stage involved teams visiting a special X checkpoint in the centre of the lake after collecting points at the checkpoints located around the lake perimeter. This turned the nearby Ellingham ski lake into a colourful spectacle as the Quest fleet of yellow and orange sit on top kayaks were paddled to and from the X hub like the spokes of a giant Catherine wheel.

Careful study of the course map paid dividends. Teams found many different routes and linked up the optional checkpoints in a myriad of different ways. The trail run and mountain biking checkpoints were widely scattered over very varied terrain including some of the best vantage points in the open heathland as well as many woodland inclosures. The network of gravel cycleways were utilised to the full to link the variously valued checkpoints. Some very strong bikers managed to visit all 15 MTB checkpoints and in so doing covered over 50 kms. Others enjoyed the countryside, challenge and comradeship of competing in their first adventure race alongside these more experienced teams.

Light showers were forecast for the day. As it turned out teams enjoyed bright if cold weather conditions. It remained largely dry save for a very heavy hail shower around 2 pm that provided one more challenge as the ground was temporarily turned white.

Teams returned in the late afternoon exhilarated and not a little exhausted by running or cycling back into a strong head wind. Hot chilli and the warmth of the sports hall beckoned. Matt from questars event partners Likeys presented prize certificates to all team members of the winning teams in eleven prize categories. These incorporate a voucher for spending on the great range of adventure racing kit available at Likeys.

Particularly notable performances came from newcomer Sam Massey who was the overall winner of the Novice class with a very impressive 721 points and overall event winner Patrick Meldrum. He amassed a tremendous total of 910 points only missing 4 of the 36 available checkpoints.

There are just a few places left in the next questars which is to be held in another very scenic national park - the Brecon Beacons - on Saturday 30 May. Quest look forward to welcoming you to this event in the late Spring.
