Course Conditions

Information about the course area and its condition for the adventure race on Sat 3 Sept 2016


Special Notes

Watch out for other people and animals including walkers, horse riders, wild animals like deer and those animals that roam freely such as New Forest ponies and cows. It is thus very important that you ensure gates are shut and properly fastened behind you. Also best to leave these slippery creatures alone if you should see one.

Most of the footpaths, bridleways and off road cycle routes are well sign posted - look out for the markers and fingerposts to keep you on the right track (NB. some are a little hidden / overgrown by the vegetation)


Trail Run

The Trail Run takes you through a mixture of farmland, woodland and heathland, with a small bit of saltmarsh as well. There are one or two tarmac sections on pavements / minor roads but expect to spend the vast majority of the time off road on dirt trails and gravel tracks.

The bracken is above head height and the gorse bushes dense in places, so when on open access land you should keep to formed paths and tracks where possible - the only exception being when you are on the open heathland where there are no / few well defined trails. Outside open access areas you are only allowed to use the public rights of way that are marked on your map.

The ground is on the whole dry and firm but expect to get your feet wet as the low lying parts of the heathland remain wet and boggy in places. Also a short (approx. 300m) section of the shoreline footpath is susceptible to flooding at high tide - you don't have to take this route but I suspect many will as it's the most direct route and the water is only ankle deep.

The worst of any mud tends to be in the woods where water seeps from the ground and the trees prevent the ground from drying out; hence these trails might be muddy and slippery in places. Trail shoes with a decent tread are therefore recommended.


Mountain Biking

Bikes are only allowed on roads, bridleways and designated off road cycle routes.

There aren't many bridleways but those that there are tend to have bare earth / mud surfaces and hence are quite uneven. They are on the whole firm and dry although watch out for one or two softer and wetter patches particularly in depressions in amongst the trees.

The off road cycle routes are predominantly gravel tracks which provide a good all weather surface on which to cycle (those that aren't gravel tracks are tarmac roads or old concrete airfield). You must not deviate from the designated off road cycle routes - they are all clearly numbered and signed. Cycling on other tracks and paths in the New Forest is strictly forbidden.

Please take care whilst cycling on roads. Even small roads can be busy in the New Forest at weekends. Keep in to the left hand side so that vehicles can pass when safe to do so.



The kayaking takes place in the Solent. Access to the sea is via a low-angle beach. You will need to walk into the water someway before getting onto your kayak as the water is not very deep. You will also need to wear something on your feet as the beach / sea floor contains sharp shell fragments which will cut your feet if you are barefoot.

You will be paddling out and back along the coast. After getting on your kayak you should paddle directly out to sea for 50-100m before turning and heading along the coast, so as to avoid and go round any people swimming from the beach. You must do likewise on your return. Anyone cutting the corner and paddling through other people in the sea will lose all their kayaking points.

Typically there is a brisk sea breeze blowing on shore which can whip up small waves (depending on the state of the tides and hence water depth). Make sure you have adequate protection from the wind and spray if it's not a particularly warm day.
