The Chilterns Adventure Race


About the Race

This adventure race follows the usual Questars format. However one or two things will be specific to this adventure race and these are outlined below. Don't worry if what follows doesn't make much sense at the moment - it will become clear after you receive the course map and attend the race briefing.

Start & Finish

The start and finish is at the event base. Come to the yellow arch on foot to start. No bikes are allowed at the start / finish arch - leave them in the designated area.

Once you've started, if you want to Mt Bike first, proceed on foot to collect your bike from the transition area and exit the school grounds on your bike. Similarly if you Mt Bike last, return your bike to the transition area and make your way to the yellow arch on foot to finish.

  • The course closes at 1640 with the furthest checkpoints removed before this (so don’t go looking for these if you are late). You should use the Emergency Contact number (on your map) to let us know if you are not going to finish before 1640.
  • Please make sure you hand in your EMIT card at the download station before 1645. Failure to do so may mean you are omitted from the provisional results and hence may miss out on receiving a winners prize.


The kayak transition point (where you get on & off the water) is 2 km from the event base. The course is designed such that everyone will need to make their way on foot to and from the kayak transition point, visiting Trail Run checkpoints along the way. The only exception is for anyone who is not able to run / walk and who doesn't intend to do any of the Trail Run - if this is you, please make sure you bring a bike lock and take it with you to the kayak transition point as there won't be anyone there to keep an eye on bikes and it is a very public / busy space.

Spectators are welcome at the kayak transition. For their own safety, spectators are kindly asked to keep out of the way of participants getting on and off the water, and to stay away from the waters edge.

The stretch of river is very popular with rowers. Rowers can't see where they are going, they move very fast and don't steer well so watch out for them (even coming up behind you). Keep close to the river bank so as not to get in their way.

You should be able to reach all kayak checkpoints from the water without having to get out of your kayak. The checkpoints are attached to white floats which are tied to objects on the side of the river. Glide up to the checkpoint in your kayak, punch them with your EMIT card as normal and kayak on. Don’t lean out of the kayak too much as you could over balance. Do not pull on the rope as you may pull the checkpoint off. Should this happen, reattach the checkpoint and inform a marshal.

  • You can only kayak within your allocated kayak time slot.
  • Maximum of 2 people per kayak. Solos & pairs use one kayak. Teams of 3 and 4 use two kayaks.
  • Always wear a correctly fastened buoyancy aid.
  • Ask the Quest Team for help if uncertain about where to sit / kayaking technique.
  • The sit on top kayaks are like giant floats, cannot sink, rarely capsize & are great fun to paddle.
  • Always follow the Navigation Code whilst on the water (keep to the right-hand side). Stay in control and keep clear of other boats / anglers lines.

Mountain Biking

Bikes must remain on public bridleways, byways and roads at all times. No bikes are allowed on footpaths at any time. See the key on the course map for details.

You should visit all the bike checkpoints that you intend to visit in one go (i.e. you should not split up the mountain biking).

  • Always wear a bike helmet.
  • Always give way to horse riders (you are legally obliged to do so on bridleways).
  • Slow down and moderate your speed when passing other people and livestock.
  • When descending narrow single track sections you must give way to riders coming uphill.
  • Always follow the Mountain Bike Code and the Highway Code.

Trail Run

The Trail Run starts and finishes from the event base.

If kayaking, you can split up the Trail Run and visit some Trail Run checkpoints before you kayak and other Trail Run checkpoints after you kayak

During the Trail Run you must stick to the public rights of way that are marked on the map. Where routes are different on the ground to those marked on the map, follow the signs on the ground.


The transition between the running and biking takes place at the event base. A control will be there for you to punch when you transition from run to bike or vice versa. You should only punch this control once during the race - when you have finished running and before starting biking or vice versa (you don't need to punch it when leaving the start or returning to the finish).

Water will be available at the event base and kayak transition for you to top up during the race.

Spectators are kindly reminded that they should not enter the bike transition area - this area is for participants only.

Marshals will keep an eye on transition areas during the race but they get pretty busy at times & space is limited. In the past a couple of people have returned to transition unable to find something of theirs because they left their things loose / on their own and these became muddled up with other participant's belongings. We therefore recommend you take the following precautions to safeguard your equipment:

  • Mt Bike items (e.g. helmet, SPDs etc.) should either be attached to or left (preferably in a bag or box) with your bike whilst you are running / kayaking.
  • Slip a lock round your bike(s).


If you have a serious accident, summon help by blowing six short blasts on your whistle every minute. If you hear this go immediately to assist (times of teams that give assistance to others can be adjusted accordingly). Phone 999 and tell the ambulance service where you are. Then phone one of the emergency contact numbers (on your map) to let us know.

  • Each team must carry a first aid kit and a whistle with them.
  • Ensure that your competitive instincts do not override your common sense.
  • Close all gates behind you.
  • Leaving litter on the course is totally unacceptable and won't be tolerated. Please make sure all empty wrappers are securely stowed and carried back to transition / the finish with you.
  • Where routes are different on the ground to those marked on your map, you should follow the route on the ground.
