Kit List


What you NEED to bring...

Per Person

  • Rucksack - or other type of bag, big enough to carry everything in (including running shoes)
  • Head Torch & Spare Batteries - for Stage 1 & 2 (10 mins) and Stage 3 (2 hour night stage)
  • Cycle Helmet
  • Suitable Offroad Bike - Mountain bikes (with front suspension) are strongly advised. Other types of bikes (e.g. cyclocross bikes) are not as suitable and may hamper your progress but they may be used providing they have appropriate tyres for off road use (slick tyres are not allowed). Any participant using an e-bike must declare this before they start and will be non-competitive (i.e. not eligible for a winners prize). Check your bike beforehand to make sure it's in a good condition - including your bike tyres otherwise you may spend most your time fixing punctures! If you want to hire a mountain bike you need to book it in advance with Drover Cycles

Per Team

  • Bike Tools - for fixing punctures e.g. pump, tyre levers & spare inner tubes
  • First Aid Kit - to deal with any minor injuries
  • Whistle - to summon help in an emergency
  • Emergency Foil Blanket - or survival bag
  • Mobile Phone - specified on your entry (to carry with you in case of emergency)
  • Compass - mandatory for Stage 3 (night navigation on foot) and Stage 4

What we ADVISE you to bring...

    • Water Bottle - or hydration system
    • Race Food - to eat on the go e.g. energy bars / gels (available to buy at the event)
    • Cash - for food & drinks (sorry, no card payments and no cash machines close by)
    • Waterproofs - wind and waterproof outer layers (top and bottom)
    • Leg cover - long socks / gaiters / leggings (to protect against brambles / nettles)
    • Clothing - layers to keep you warm during the race
    • Reflective Clothing - useful for Stage 3 (night navigation on foot) when on roads
    • Hat - sun / winter
    • Gloves - mountain bike / winter
    • Trail Running Shoes - with a decent off-road tread
    • Watch - or other timing device
    • Map Pen - permanent marker for writing on the map (available to buy at the event)
    • Sun Cream - if it looks like it might be sunny (there's not much shade on the tops)
    • Waterproof Bag - or pouch / case for your mobile phone & valuables
    • Bike Bell - to warn others of your approach (some routes may be busy with walkers / horse riders)
    • Storage Box / Bag - to leave your kit in, in the hall at the event base (left at your own risk)
    • Bike Lock - a lock to slip round your bike / bikes when not in use / at the event base

Plus if you are camping on site you'll need to bring all your own camping equipment - tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag etc. The event caterers will be on site for the duration of the event so you don't have to bring cooking equipment if you don't want to. If you do plan to do your own cooking, the golden rule to remember is that you must not cause any damage to the grass so...

  • Open fires are not allowed
  • BBQ's are allowed as long as they are raised up off the grass
  • Camp stoves that have legs or sit on top of a gas bottle are fine

Additional Notes

GPS devices may be carried with you to record your route for post-race analysis. GPS enabled devices should not be used for any navigational purpose or to view your position during the race (except in case of an emergency). It's a good idea to download and install the OS Locate app on a smart phone, which can be used to let both the emergency services and us know your exact location in an emergency.
