TrackLogs digital mapping
TrackLogs digital mapping lets you plan, navigate, analyse and print routes on your Windows PC using Ordnance Survey Digital Mapping which you can purchase on CDROM. Some of the features we particularly like are:
Ordnance Survey Digital Maps
TrackLogs maps include genuine Ordnance Survey digital data and are visually identical to the paper 1:25,000 Explorer and 1:50,000 Landranger maps. We will be using the 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey digital data to create race maps for the one-day Questars races so previous Questars competitors won't notice any difference in the type of map; just an improvement in the quality of the end result!
Route Planning
TrackLogs digital mapping is much more than just a map. All TrackLogs products include route planning and route management software tools. You can use your mouse to plan routes on the map, then add text descriptions and full written route instructions. We will be using these features when designing, planning and reviewing Questars courses to give us important statistics that will allow us to analyse and compare courses.
GPS Support
TrackLogs can communicate with popular handheld GPS units. You can download the contents of your GPS for post trip analysis or send a pre-planned route to the device for navigation in the field. We shall therefore use GPS units to mark the location of each checkpoint when we recce Questars events. The location of the checkpoints will then be downloaded onto the event map to create a Questars map with all the pre-marked checkpoints on.
PLEASE NOTE: Race participants are not allowed to use GPS units to aid navigation during Questars adventure races.
Map Printing
With TrackLogs you can print full colour Ordnance Survey maps on your home printer. Flexible printing tools let you control precisely what is printed and automatically span your route over multiple pages when required. The TrackLogs software really comes into its own when it comes to printing as it has a whole range of different options that lets you print exactly what you want, unlike some other digital mapping software.
Exact scale print options create maps which replicate the precise scales of traditional paper maps, something which is very important for Questars maps. These are perfectly matched for use with compass roamer scales or for users looking for familiar distance metrics.
In addition Tracklogs has several other features that Questars competitors might find useful to help improve their performance. These include:
3D Mapping
You can add a third dimension to your digital maps which really makes them come alive. TrackLogs use the latest satellite derived data from NASA to generate digital elevation models of the earth onto which Ordnance Survey mapping data is drapped. This is a great tool for a pre-race analysis of the area in which a Questars adventure race is being held as it clearly shows what the terrain is like, so it gives you a heads up before you actually take part in the race.
Elevation Profile
TrackLogs has built in digital elevation models which are used to calculate and display profile information. These graphical profiles update dynamically as you plan your route and include additional measurement cursors for detailed analysis. This is a great feature for post race analysis of your route. You can even use the Questars split times results to plot the routes taken by other teams and hence you can learn from their route choice.
Statistics
Using a combination of elevation models and Naismith pacing algorithms TrackLogs calculates statistics for your route. These are dynamically updated as you route plan and are displayed in a user configurable tool window. As well as being useful for post-race analysis of your route taken, this tool is also good for analysing your training runs and bike rides as you prepare for a Questars race.
